Air Conditioner Not Cooling? Check These 4 Things

Posted on

Is your air conditioner not functioning properly? One of the main issues that can arise with HVAC units is a lack of cold air. You turn on your air conditioner and the air that circulates is not cold air. There are several reasons this could be happening. This article will discuss some of the causes of this problem and what you can do about them.

Thermostat Settings

The first thing you need to do is make sure that the issue has nothing to do with your thermostat. Double check the thermostat to make sure it is on the correct setting.

You will need to make sure that the temperature you have it set at is lower than the temperature in your home. This may seem obvious, but some homeowners make the mistake of calling a professional when they only needed to adjust their thermostat.

Also, it is important to make sure that your thermostat is functioning correctly. Faulty thermostats can cause your air conditioner to malfunction.

Outdoor Unit

If your thermostat is on the right setting and it is good condition, then it's likely that the issue is with the outdoor unit itself. The unit contains various parts that could disrupt the operation of your unit if they are faulty.

The first thing you need to check is the condenser fan and the compressor. The condenser fan and compressor are the parts that work together to provide cold air to your home. If one of these is malfunctioning, it will prevent your air conditioner from cooling your home.

Inspect the unit to see if you can hear the compressor running. If you can hear the compressor running, but the fan is not spinning, then turn off the unit. If you leave it on, it may cause damage to the compressor.

Use a long item that you put through the grill and push the blade gently. If the fan is easy to move, then the motor might be burned out.

If the fan is not easy to move, then you may be dealing with a faulty bearing. Try spraying WD-40 on the bearing. If this doesn't help, then you should call a professional to take a look at it.

Air Ducts

Make sure you inspect all of the air ducts in your home. You will be looking for holes, tears, cracks, or defects. This could cause air to leak, which will impact your air conditioner's ability to cool the home.

If you notice a leak in your ducts, you can use duct tape to seal it. While this is a great temporary solution, you will still need to have the ducts replaced eventually.

Air Filter

Another cause of the problem could be dirty air filters. Over time, air filters accumulate dirt and dust mites.

If this happens, it means that it can impact the flow of air through the unit. If you see that your air filter is dirty, you should replace it as soon as possible.

If none of the steps outlined in this article solve the problem, hire an air conditioner repair professional who can determine what the issue is.
