Choosing The Type Of Glass For Your Shower Door

Posted on

A shower is an important component of a bathroom. While the purpose of a shower is mostly utilitarian, it can also serve as a key feature in the design of a bathroom. To create a statement, you need to do more than simply look for a readily available door. Instead, you should consider the different options of glass that you could use in a shower door and choose one that works with the design scheme in your home.

Clear or Low Iron Glass

Bathrooms tend to be tight spaces. That being said, it is a good idea to integrate design pieces that will give a more open feel to your bathroom. Clear glass doors will blur the boundaries between shower and the rest of the bathroom; however, clear glass doors will have a slight greenish hue to them. If you want a truly clear door, you should consider using low iron glass.

Glass with a Personality

Clear glass has its uses, but it will not give much privacy to people who use your shower, nor will it give a lot of personality to your bathroom. Some people don't like the idea of being on display while they are in their shower. Other people want glass that makes a statement. Either way, you can find a few different types of glass that give you the look you are after:

1. Etched Glass: Etched glass is created by applying an acid to one side of a glass surface. In this way, you can create a random pattern, or you can create a custom image.

2. Hammered Glass: A piece of hammered glass will have a wavy surface on one side that will imitate the look of a piece of hammered steel. This wavy surface can pair well with a bathroom designed to have an industrial feel.

3. Tinted Glass: Tinted glass comes in a few different colors. You can choose the color of the tinting to match the design scheme in your bathroom. For example, if you feature bronze fixtures in your bathroom, a piece of shower glass with a bronze tint can pair well with them.

Choosing the glass to feature in your shower door is an important decision. You will likely have to live with your choice for years to come. Taking the time to make sure that you get just what you want is the best way to make sure that you get a look that you can live with.
